<b>Retail.</b> Like it or not, Americans love to buy stuff. One of the fastest-growing employment segments is retail. This trend is likely to continue just to keep up with the increasing population. Retail hiring, however, is often challenged by high turnover and seasonality. Mature employees with a great attitude and customer service skills can be an excellent balance to the short-term mind set of many younger retail clerks. Keys to being hired are a genuine interest in the products being offered, obvious friendliness, some interest/exposure to technology and ability to physically move around. Although many people recognize Home Depot and Lowe's as two places that hire retirees, <a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2013/08/22/4-part-time-jobs-that-pave-the-way-to-your-future-career" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;" title="Link: http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2013/08/22/4-part-time-jobs-that-pave-the-way-to-your-future-career">think creatively</a> about other stores that may pique your interest. Book stores, specialty grocery stores, office supplies, toys, car parts, pool equipment, health food/vitamins are just some examples of retail employers.</div>

<b>Food service.</b> As much as we like to buy stuff, we also like to follow up our shopping trip with a fast and convenient meal. Similar to the retail industry, chain food restaurants struggle with recruiting and keeping dedicated, customer-oriented employers. Most major fast food chains hire retirees, but you may also find openings at cafes within bookstores, coffee kiosks in grocery stores and other food/drink chains within another business location.</div>

<b>Health care.</b> Close to 50 percent of AARP’s 2013 list of top employers for retirees are in health care. Home care aides and health aides are two of the <a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/careers/best-jobs/rankings/best-healthcare-jobs" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;" title="Link: http://money.usnews.com/careers/best-jobs/rankings/best-healthcare-jobs">fastest-growing employment segments</a> that don’t require a specific degree or lengthy training process. To be qualified for an aide position, you should be healthy, physically active and patient with those who are not. Your role may be in a hospital, medical facility, nursing home or at a patient’s residence. Hiring may be done by the health care provider, an external company who is contracting with a facility, a retirement community or by a nursing/care facility. Some hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that you can try first to get experience and determine if the role is a good match for you.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
<b>Customer service.</b> Not looking for a physically active role but still have people skills? There are many part-time positions providing customer service. Some examples include security guard/lobby attendant who checks in guests and prints ID badges at an office building, a ticket taker at an entertainment venue (think movie theater, concert hall or sport arena) or an information desk clerk at a museum or community center. You might also be qualified and interested in being a customer service phone agent for a travel, products or services company. Many of the roles occur in a local call center where you take inbound calls from customers who have a variety of questions.</div>

<b>Work from home.</b> The software giant Intuit released an Intuit 2020 Report that predicts 60 million workers, or roughly 40 percent of the labor force, will <a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2012/06/06/how-to-work-from-home-without-losing-your-mind-or-your-job" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;" title="Link: http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2012/06/06/how-to-work-from-home-without-losing-your-mind-or-your-job">work from home</a> by this decade's end. Many of these remote employees will be in customer service, sales and support positions. Before considering such a job, make sure you have chosen a reputable employer, that you understand exactly what kind of work is expected from you and that you know how you will get paid. Look for employer reviews through the Better Business Bureau (bbb.org), Yelp.com and Glassdoor.com. You can also search for the employer’s name using Bing or Google to see what comes up. Avoid any business without an ethical reputation and a clear outline of job description and compensation.</div>

<b>How to Apply?</b><br />Review sites like Indeed.com, GrooveJob.com and Craigslist.com for local openings. For local stores/retailers and restaurants, make a list of 20 places/companies that you'd like to target. Look each one up online if possible to see if they have an application or other hiring details. Next, select a business casual outfit to wear as opposed to a formal suit. Visit each business on your list in person. Ask to speak with the manager and simply state that you really enjoy shopping there and are wondering if they're hiring for part-time or seasonal employees in the near future. Inquire about the application process and follow the steps provided. Provide a completed online application, if possible. You can also ask if any other locations are hiring.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
If you haven’t heard back in two weeks, it's fine to call or email to follow up on their <a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/money/careers/articles/2014/04/24/the-secret-to-hiring-well" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;" title="Link: http://money.usnews.com/money/careers/articles/2014/04/24/the-secret-to-hiring-well">hiring plans</a>. After that, a call one more time or six weeks before a busy season is a simple way to be politely persistent. If it's a business that hires students, calling a month before school is back in session is also helpful. Don't continue to follow up if the manager has made it clear he or she has no upcoming hiring plans, or if you're not a candidate for the roles the business does have. You can, however, ask for any advice or suggestions of regarding other businesses that are hiring.</div>

As a job hunter, it is your responsibility to understand and convey how it is that you can contribute to the advancement of any employer’s mission. What about your skills, education and experience will enable you to make a significant contribution to your next employer?</div>

<b>2. </b><b>Determining your target. </b>It is important to figure out the right type of company or organization that will generally need someone like you. It's also critical to understand in what kind of environment you will feel comfortable and productive. What industry? What organization size? What type of products or services? What kind of role?</div>

Specialized databases like Hoovers, accessible through most public libraries, can be invaluable. Support this research with informational interviews with key leaders in your field.</div>

<b>3. </b><b>Crafting your brand and message. </b>For whatever role you seek, you will likely face strong competition from many candidates who possess similar backgrounds as yours. Rather than ramble on about the responsibilities that you share with others, focus on the qualities, experience and expertise that set you apart from the pack.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
Your personal branding statement should be at the top of your résumé and LinkedIn profile. In essence, it is the answer to the first question at every interview: Tell me about yourself [and what sets you apart from your competition]. You should develop a consistent message, which is presented differently in the forms of your  résumé, LinkedIn profile and professional bio.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
<b>4. </b><b>Prospecting. </b>Now that you know your value and what you want, it's time to start actively prospecting for jobs. There are numerous ways to go about this by scouting posted positions on company Web pages, job boards, LinkedIn, Indeed and so on. But remember: About 80 percent of new hires come about from personal networking. Get out there and attend professional events like symposia, conferences, conventions and trade shows. Network with fellow college alumni, people in your community and at Meetup groups. In short: <a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2014/10/01/forget-these-5-networking-myths" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;">Network anywhere</a>, everywhere and all the time!</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
<b>5. D</b><b>etermining the rough fit in a phone interview. </b>In most situations, an employer will sift through many résumés to do a “rough cut” of people who appear on the surface to meet and exceed the minimum job requirements. Typically, an internal recruiter or human resources representative will make a call, say some flattering things and set up a phone screening interview. Don’t mistake statements like “you appear to have what we are looking for” as anything more than a general indication of interest. You don’t have the job yet!</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
This is the time to show you're really the person your résumé represents. Be prepared to discuss every career and educational transition, the basics of what you do and what would be required of you. This isn’t the time for final decisions or discussions of compensation.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
<b>6. Dealing with red flags</b>. Part of the screening process is to take a look at anything that might be disqualifying for an otherwise potentially strong candidate. Things like <a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2012/05/17/how-to-handle-an-employment-gap" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;" title="Link: http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2012/05/17/how-to-handle-an-employment-gap">employment gaps</a>, too many or too few career transitions and a host of other factors might cause concern. Take time to figure out what your obvious red flags are, and be prepared to help your interviewer lower them, so you can proceed to making your case at the “real” interview.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
<b>7. Making your case. </b>This, of course, is what happens at any face-to-face job interview. Come prepared for whatever can be thrown at you. Know your résumé inside and out, and be able to expand on anything you have written in it.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
Articles and books about interviewing for a job are more than plentiful. Read them and prepare, but don’t over-prepare so much that your answers come off as rehearsed. When it comes down to it, you can’t fake sincerity and should never misrepresent what you’ve done. Rehearsed lines may also minimize the positive reaction you should have when demonstrating genuine interest in the company, role to be filled and how you would be able to make a significant contribution.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
<b>8. </b><b>Negotiating the deal. </b>You will always be in a stronger position to <a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2013/05/08/11-tips-for-negotiating-your-next-job-offer" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;" title="Link: http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2013/05/08/11-tips-for-negotiating-your-next-job-offer">negotiate for a higher level of compensation</a> if you wait until all your competition has been eliminated. Then you don’t have to worry about low-balling them or selling yourself too short. At the same time, remember that you want to start out on a good foot, with neither you nor the employer feeling dragged over the coals in a protracted or contentious negotiation. Talk about objective criteria rather than vague wants, and give a solid justification for whatever requests you make.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
Whole books are available for each of these stages of the job hunt. However, when you remember these basics and use them as a frame of reference for your own search strategy, you’ll have a sense of what you need to do to get to where you want to go.</div>

Here's an overview of those occupations that could be particularly bad for your physical or emotional well-being, as determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics' annual report on fatal occupational injuries as well as CareerCast.com’s annual list of most stressful jobs.  </div>

It’s discouraging how hazardous construction work can be. Even the best-trained workers could fall, suffer electrocution or get trapped between surfaces. They also run the risk of exposure to strong chemicals, fumes and particles. Protective gear may stave off illness, but it doesn’t prevent it altogether, and Health.com notes construction workers who inhale dust on a job site are at risk for lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. The BLS reports fatal work injuries in construction and extraction occupations fell 6 percent and 15 percent, respectively, between 2012 and 2013. Still, two construction jobs – roofers and general construction laborers – were among the top 10 occupations with the highest fatal work injuries in 2013. One extraction job, mining machine operator, also appeared on the BLS list.</div>

<b>Service</b></div>

The BLS reports fatal work injuries have increased to 247 fatalities within protective service occupations, like firefighters and police officers, and on-the-job injury is still common. There’s also an expected emotional toll from caring for the lives of others while working long, unorthodox shifts. As a result, these two professions were included on CareerCast’s list of the 10 most stressful jobs. Firefighters face an additional health threat due to their possible exposure to toxic chemicals.</div>

There’s a great chance of physical injury on other service-performing jobs as well. Garbage collectors could suffer muscle strain while lifting heavy objects around warehouses and on dump trucks. Plus there’s a chance of injury if those collectors who ride in or on the back of a garbage truck are involved in an auto accident. Electric power-line installers and repairers could be electrocuted on live wire or accidentally fall. According to the BLS, both professions experience high injury rates and are among the 10 occupations with the highest fatal work injuries in 2013.</div>

Jobs in these industries are ideal for those who love the outdoors, don’t mind getting their hands dirty and don’t mind suffering a scrape or two. Working in nature with livestock or marine life means juggling the unexpected, and there’s a great chance for injury, even for the well-seasoned and well-trained. Farmers and ranchers as well as fishers and logging workers were among the 10 occupations with the highest fatal work injuries in 2013, although on-the-job fatalities in these fields have actually declined to 225.</div>

<b>Armed Services</b></div>

Armed services jobs range from those directly related to defense, like a fighter pilot, to those that have a civilian equivalent, like a navy lawyer, so the strain someone in this field might experience varies. One thing’s certain: Any job within the military could involve extensive periods away from home, irregular shifts, the responsibility for the lives of others and the possibility of placing those lives – and your own – at risk. For these reasons, CareerCast included both enlisted military personnel (any military member who serves at a rank below commissioned officer) and military general (an officer who has reached the top of the military rank structure) on its list of most stressful jobs of 2014. The BLS reports 67 fatal work injuries to resident military personnel in 2013, compared to 50 in 2012.</div>

<b>Transportation</b></div>

Let’s skirt past the obvious – operating heavy mobile machinery is always dangerous – to little-thought-of reasons transportation jobs affect physical and emotional health. First, there’s the exposure to fumes and chemicals: For example, Health.com notes delivery truck drivers who unload merchandise at loading docks are at risk for lung diseases like COPD. Airline pilots risk hearing loss from their prolonged exposure to blaring plane engine noise. There’s also the mental stress involved from being responsible for the safety of your passengers. Airline pilot also appeared on CareerCast's list, along with taxi driver, for being especially stressful. The BLS reports fatal work injuries in transportation professions actually declined 10 percent last year. Still, the aforementioned jobs were among the 10 occupations with the highest fatal work injury rates in 2013.</div>

<b>1. Be quick to share credit when something goes well</b>. Have you heard the quote: “Leaders take all the blame and give away all the credit”? Madnick believes every manager should <a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2012/10/11/how-to-be-a-team-player-when-you-work-with-a-slacker" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;">recognize contributors</a> on his or her team whenever there is a success to celebrate. He celebrates everyone’s roles in “wins” and does not solely focus on those who may typically receive accolades, such as employees directly involved in landing a new client.</div>

How can you inspire a culture where the organization values and acknowledges each person’s role, including those who keep the office running or make fresh coffee each day? He explains: “We often find leaders through internal events and charity drives. Often, these are great people who just haven’t yet had the opportunity to lead client engagement, and we learn a lot about them by what they contribute."</div>

At many companies, it is the employees – not partners or senior managers – who set the bar for community service activity. An organization with a strong corporate culture likely attracts employees who appreciate the opportunity to give back via volunteer work such as Habitat for Humanity and soup kitchens. If you have a favorite charity or cause, consider how you can get others in your organization involved in giving back. When employees and leadership members can rally around a great cause, it can really improve the organization’s culture.</div>

<b>3. Show industry leadership</b>. Madnick suggests you volunteer to serve on committees and work on projects. When you are directly involved in solving the problems facing your profession, you gain visibility and enhance both your own reputation and the employer’s brand. While this type of volunteer work does not generate billable hours, it helps produce good will and extends the organization’s networking capacity – each of which improves company culture.</div>

<b>4. Collaborate</b>. Rarely will a firm that silos its employees win any awards for corporate culture. Madnick encourages employees to reach out across silos to educate fellow professionals about new opportunities. He notes: “We recently sent a few people from one office to another to help with a large project and were very happy to see that they reported back on opportunities for more such collaborations. Consider how you can suggest opportunities to cross train by both learning from and teaching others in your organization. Every time you reach out, you’re strengthening the company culture. Plus, Madnick notes: “Employees who consistently network from other disciplines and offices are more visible to managers and are more likely to be fast tracked for advancement and new assignments.”</div>
