Conventional wisdom suggests that people who are good at and enjoy what they do – while they may be in the minority – are happier and more successful in their jobs.</div>

How can you be one of those people? Philip Hardin is the CEO of YouScience, a scientific, online profile that measures aptitudes and interests and helps students set a direction for their educations and careers. He believes the key to taking control of your <a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2014/01/23/how-to-map-your-career-path" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;" title="Link: null">career path</a> is finding a career at the intersection of what you’re good at (aptitudes), what you love to do (interests) and what the market needs you to do (opportunity). These are his tips to help identify your path:</div>

<b>1. Understand your aptitudes. </b>Hardin defines aptitudes as the foundation for skill development. He asks: “Have you noticed how easy it is for you to acquire skills in certain areas, while in others – no matter how hard you try – you end up average?" Understanding your natural aptitudes allows you to play to your strengths and focus on those areas that will give you a true competitive advantage. “Everyone could use a competitive advantage in this tight job market, but every career requires a different blend of natural aptitudes.</div>

It’s easy to assess your basic skills. For example, are you a strong communicator, or are you good at math? Some skills are a little less obvious. Do you think in 3D? (What are your spatial relations skills?) How quickly can you diagnose and critique a problem? (Do you have inductive reasoning capabilities?) Knowing your unique portfolio of aptitudes provides you with a foundation to help target your education, skill development and career.</div>

<b>2. Identify your interests. </b>Wouldn’t it be ideal if you could do what you love at work? Challenges to this proposition, which include not being very good at what you love and there being few prospects in the field you love, can make it tough to accomplish this goal. Hardin notes: “Doing what you love is one important piece of the career puzzle, but your interests are relative to your experience. Your interests evolve over time as you gain life experiences. They are important when considering a career, because they influence your choices and should direct how you apply your natural aptitudes.”</div>

<b>3. Find the opportunities. </b>The marketplace is <a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2014/01/07/top-10-workplace-trends-for-2014" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;" title="Link: null">constantly changing</a> on an international, national and local level. Whether you are 18 or 50, before you focus on a particular career, it’s a good idea to assess the landscape and opportunities. “Is the tide coming in or out for a particular industry or occupation? You have a set of natural aptitudes and interests; it is your job to find out how best to apply them," Hardin says. "The job market is a moving target. If you are stagnant, it will hurt you.”</div>

Don’t worry, you don’t need to get out your crystal ball or hone clairvoyant abilities to succeed. However, you do need to recognize when the world is changing. "It shows you didn't get the memo," says Phyllis Mufson, a Sarasota, Florida-based career coach. A 2013 Jobvite survey of 1,600 recruiting and human resources professionals found the percentage of recruiters using or planning to use social media for their scouting at 94 – 94! – percent. While being judged based on your online persona may seem unnerving, the practice can actually be helpful to job seekers. A June CareerBuilder survey found that employers often liked what they saw on candidates' profiles.<i></i><br />

</i>Nearly half of the 2,000-plus hiring managers and human resources professionals surveyed said they hired a candidate because they got a good sense of his or her personality via social media and could see the person being a good fit with the company culture. Many of those surveyed were also impressed by candidates' professional images, communication skills and wide ranges of interest.<br />

For baby boomers and older job seekers, an online presence can be doubly important. "Most boomers in the job search are concerned about age bias on the part of employers," says Mufson, referring to the assumption that older workers lack technology know-how. "Being active in social media is one of the ways you can immediately signal to employers that you’re not those people – you’re going to create the impression that you’re up on what’s happening, you’re keeping up on trends and you’re technologically adept."</div>

Appearing to be "technologically adept" doesn't have to be an overwhelming pursuit for those new to the digital world. "One of the reasons a lot of people avoid getting involved in social media is because they feel like they have to do it all," Mufson says. But that's not the case. Mufson advises beginners to take it slow with the five steps below:</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
<b>1. Google yourself. </b>Open a new browser window or tab in "incognito" mode, and Google your name. What do you see? If personal Facebook photos crop up, that's an indicator you should tighten your privacy settings on the social network. If someone else with your name is hogging the whole search page with his or her websites and profiles, Mufson suggests adding a middle initial or a maiden name to yours when creating new profiles. This way, you'll be more easily found and less likely to be confused with other people with the same name.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
<b>2. Build your LinkedIn profile. </b>In the Jobvite survey, 96 percent of recruiters said they search for candidates on LinkedIn, 94 percent said they contact candidates on LinkedIn and 92 percent said they vet candidates on LinkedIn before setting up interviews. As Mufson sums it up: "It's the big kahuna" of job search. While Twitter and other platforms certainly matter, she suggests beginners "build a home base on LinkedIn" first. Take advantage of LinkedIn's thorough articles, videos and new user guides to get started, she says.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
Mufson also stresses the importance of filling out the profile until it's 100 percent complete, which you can track on the bar graph on the right-hand side of your profile page. A complete profile means you should add a profile photo, too. She points out that some older candidates are wary of posting a photo for fear it'll result in age bias. Her point: Your age will come out sooner or later. "If you are frank about who you are, where you are and your age, the people who are going to contact you are already OK with it," she says. While career experts vary on their profile photo advice, Mufson suggests using a headshot for LinkedIn. The look you're going for? "Approachable and confident," she says.</div>

<b>Taking tech too far.</b> While many around you may seem to be doing the opposite, bringing discretion and common sense to your social media approach can save your career reputation and your job. When it comes to work, it’s always a bad move to post any negative opinions about people you know and places you go or have been – particularly current or past colleagues and companies.</div>

“<a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2013/03/05/can-office-gossip-work-in-your-favor" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;" title="Link: null">Office gossip</a> is always a bad idea, but posting anything like that online is an even worse idea,” says John Turner, CEO of UsersThink. “The ease and convenience of social media is always a tempting way to vent, but information shared on such platforms has an odd way of getting out to a larger audience, no matter the settings or promises of privacy.” Turner suggests that when in doubt, avoid posting such thoughts online, in any format, at any time. Assume there’s no expiration date on what you share. “You never know when a post from years ago could come back to haunt you,” Turner says.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
Erik Dochtermann, co-founder and CEO of creative advertising agency MODCo Group, advises aspiring career climbers to remember that they are never off the clock – either online or outside the office. Because today’s tech tools and toys make it simple to widely publicize anything that happens seconds after the fact, the way you behave outside of work matters, particularly if you attend client or industry events.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
“In the age of social media, nothing goes unnoticed (and could be recorded and forwarded), so behave respectfully,” Dochtermann says. “If you are on the career path, you can’t afford to get rip-roaring drunk, blast your superiors, complain about clients or satirize your co-workers.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
<b>Not respecting workplace culture.</b> You might think that if you’re good at your job, you can put your head down and do your work without worrying about what’s happening around you. But having a solid read on your office environment and basing your actions on that awareness is another important part of your job. In fact, being a poor fit within a <a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2013/06/10/how-to-tell-if-a-company-culture-will-be-a-bad-fit" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;">company’s culture</a> can ultimately end in your dismissal.</div>

“By far the greatest mistake anyone can make is to think that technical expertise or job performance in itself can ever trump a solid understanding of the social and hierarchical nature of the workplace,” says Margaret J. King, director of the Center for Cultural Studies & Analysis. “Every group setting has a hierarchy of power and interrelated networks. The first order of business is to psych out this order, then decide where you and your skills fit into it.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
Culture exists to help create business results from the cohesion created by shared norms in areas such as attire, effective communication and performance standards. “Deviating too much for too long – especially while not being an overall high performer – is to create a stigma for yourself and a stain on the group’s culture,” says Todd Dewett, author and leadership and workplace expert. “In higher performing groups, significant deviations are not tolerated for long.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
On a related note, Dewett says that overly simplistic, black-and-white perspectives that don’t respect a diversity of opinion should also be avoided. “People who are too rigid upset team chemistry and negatively affect culture,” he says.</div>

<b>Playing politics the wrong way – or not at all.</b> <a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2013/02/26/6-tips-for-sidestepping-the-office-politics-vortex" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;">Office politics</a> are among the most difficult aspects of jobs in every industry. Yet while few people enjoy political maneuverings with colleagues, politics are a reality that can’t be ignored if you care about your career.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
“Failing to understand alliances, agendas, personalities and culture will increase the likelihood you misstep and begin creating enemies, whether out of jealousy or just plain dislike,” says Frank Niles, co-founder and managing partner of Scholar Executive Group.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
Some workplace experts, like Lynne Sarikas, director of the MBA Career Center at the D’Amore McKim School of Business at Northeastern University, suggest resisting office politics as much as possible. “Do not listen to the office gossip, and do not participate in spreading gossip,” she says. “Office politics can be a black hole that wastes a lot of time and distracts you from what you need to do to be successful.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
Yet others suggest tackling politics head on, playing the game to the best of your ability. “You can neither avoid the common cold nor office politics,” says Vickie Rotante, Principal at Impera Executive Recruiters. “The goal is rather to navigate well and with integrity, because that is a sustainable model.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 25px; padding: 0px;">
One way to approach politics is to avoid taking sides. “You are likely to feel that someone is in the wrong in certain situations,” says career coach Chaz Pitts-Kyser. “However, unless you are directly involved in it, you shouldn’t deliberately show whose side you are on.” Another option is to steer clear of<a class="" href="http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2014/03/05/how-to-complain-about-a-co-worker" style="color: #005ea6; text-decoration: none;" title="Link: http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/2014/03/05/how-to-complain-about-a-co-worker">manipulative co-workers</a>.</div>
