<b>Choose the right internship.</b> As with any job, you don’t want to hate your work, and you don't want it to be useless in moving your career forward. If you start your post-graduation career with an internship outside your field, it won’t do much for you. According to Mark Babbitt, CEO and founder of YouTern, an organization that helps young people find internships, "Internships are all about positioning yourself for the job market. It's an investment in yourself." </div>

<b>Stop acting like an intern.</b> Yes, you work with the other interns, but that doesn’t mean you have to be late, rude, cynical or passive about the work you’re doing. You may have the intern title and an intern hourly wage – assuming you're paid – but your position may just be the start with your employer. "You have to act like a part of the team,” Babbitt says. He adds that interns who take on more responsibility are viewed as indispensable and have an increased chance of staying employed.</div>

<b>Be enthusiastic.</b> You probably work with people who have grown into their positions and don’t see the job with your fresh perspective, so be an incubator for ideas and energy. It’s contagious. Despite your position on the totem pole, you should project a positive attitude about each task. “As an intern, you may do a lot of meaningful work and some tasks that others don’t want to do. You have to do it all with a smile,” says Randy DeCleene, senior vice president of communications at the public relations firm kglobal. </div>

Babbitt looks for an entrepreneurial spirit and coachability in interns. “I want you to own your challenges, be competent, be willing to speak up when you need help and take constructive criticism," he says.</div>

<b>Use your position to your advantage.</b> You’re on the inside of the organization when most didn’t make it in the door. So do some scouting from the inside, and look beyond your duties for ways to leave your mark in the organization. “Interns are in a unique position to network," Babbitt says. "They are surrounded with potential contacts and mentors.” He suggests presenting yourself as an eager intern who's interested in learning from seasoned employees. Scheduling informational interviews with employees in other departments is also a good idea.</div>

<b>Be willing to work harder and smarter.</b> Everyone does things they don’t like or want to do. Whether you're picking up coffee and doughnuts, making copies, stuffing envelopes or conducting research, work hard and leave after the work is done. Little tasks are the building blocks of big projects. “Interns sometimes think they should be doing a different level of work, and it reflects poorly in their attitude and can spiral out of control,” DeCleene says. Babbitt says internships during college are 90 percent about learning; after graduation, it’s more about making an impact at the company with 10 percent learning. “Most employers don’t expect interns in college to contribute, and they are viewed as a trainee. That’s where they can take advantage," he says. "They can contribute for a chance to get a job offer.”</div>

<b>Be social and competitive.</b> Make friends with the rest of your intern class, but remember they are likely your competition for the next job opening in the company. Babbitt says some interns fall into complacency. “Sometimes in larger corporations, interns are all together, and they can fall into the lowest common denominator,” he says. Avoid getting too comfortable and losing sight of your goal.</div>

<b>Cultivate relationships.</b> Remember that networking and building relationships are essential for your future success. Your relationships can lead to jobs and opportunities both inside and outside the company. According to Babbitt, most job offers are a direct result of networking. DeCleene agrees, adding that it’s important to make meaningful connections, whether it's over coffee, lunch or just talking about your résumé and experience with others. “It’s all about communication and talking to people who can be your advocate," DeCleene says. "You should be as real as possible and give someone a reason to take an interest in you.”</div>

<b>Apply your experiences.</b> Even if you leave the internship without a job offer, find ways to apply your experiences to other opportunities. After all, your internships are still professional experience you can add to your résumé. Make it count. While transitioning from an intern to a permanent employee is preferred, a position must be open for you to get an offer, Decleene points out. Even if there are no openings, your experience will still be valuable at another place of employment.</div>

5 Career Lessons From Extreme Athletes

Follow the lead of these athletes. Get determined and exercise your risk-taking skills.</P><P>Are you pounding the pavement looking for a new job and feeling down and out? Or maybe you’re in a career plateau navigating your next move. Either way, there are lessons to be learned from professionals who have faced challenging obstacles in severe conditions.</P><P><B>1. You can overcome anything.</B> Meet Paul Cayard, a yachtsman and professional sailor who has competed in the America’s Cup seven times and has circumnavigated the globe twice. This two-time Olympian describes the Volvo Ocean Race, which circles the globe and involves traversing 38,739 nautical miles. The race starts in Europe, ends in Antarctica and is composed of eight legs, which vary from four days to four weeks. Boats and crews experience sweltering heat, frigid conditions and blustering winds.</P><P>Biggest lesson learned: “It’s the age-old saying to never ever give up. In my second round-the-world race on Pirates of the Caribbean, we broke our boat on the first leg. We were in last place in Cape Town, struggling to gain confidence in a poorly built boat. Eventually, we got it on track, and in the end, we won the last leg and finished second overall. That was actually more satisfying than when I won the event in 1998. We climbed a steeper wall.”</P><P>How this applies to you: “You can pretty much overcome anything. You need to hang in there, keep tinkling, keep persevering and eventually you will prevail.” </P><P><B>2. Learn from failure, and take risks.</B> Minda Dentler has been competing in triathlons for six years and was the first female to complete the handcycling event at the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. In addition to training and competing in triathlons, Dentler works full time on Wall Street as director of operations at a large multinational insurance company.</P><P>As a result of having polio as a child, her legs are paralyzed. Her full Ironman competition equates to swimming for 2.4 miles, handcycling for 112 miles and pushing a racing wheelchair for 26.2 miles using just her upper body. The swim-bike cutoff time is a difficult 10 hours and 30 minutes, and the extreme elements include heat and strong crosswinds.</P><P>After not making the cutoff in 2012, she came back in 2013 with a new plan. “I knew I had to be very careful to manage my energy, pace and effort throughout the day to get onto the run course.” This time, she prepared differently, ensured her mind and body in the right space, assembled a team and entered the race “well-rested and without injuries.” </P><P>Biggest lesson learned: “There were moments in the 2013 race where I was in jeopardy of not making the cutoff time, and I literally had to push aside my internal voice that told me to quit. I had to tell myself to push through the pain and keep the laser focus.”</P><P>How this applies to you: “Mental toughness is a necessary quality to be a successful leader in the workplace. We must learn from failure, take risks, anticipate issues, handle tough situations and manage through change while not letting negative voices affect us.”</P><P><B>3. Taking the leap is almost always worthwhile. </B>Ask<B> </B>Adrian Ballinger, founder of Alpenglow Expeditions, about climbing the tallest active volcano in the world, big mountain climbing and skiing, and he’ll mention “risk component." He says: "We’re always trying to manage risk, but it is a component of what we do. It’s not always fun in the moment.”</P><P>Ballinger highlights the power of danger and risks. “I like to manage and analyze risk to minimize it and make the goal attainable. The sport of climbing by its nature has hardship and accidents, so going through those things in the moment have forced me to think about why these experiences are worth the risks they entail.”</P><P>Biggest lesson learned: “Take risks. As I’ve grown in this industry and sport, I’ve often found myself in comfortable positions where it is easy to stay where I am in my career. But it’s worth it to take the next leap.”</P><P>How this applies to you: “The risk doesn’t have to be physical or about life and limb – it can be career, emotional or financial. If you have considered the risk and mitigated it to the greatest risk possible, taking the leap is almost always worthwhile.”</P><P><B>4. Have hope, fight hard and love what you do.</B> There’s more to New York Giants’ linebacker Mark Herzlich than meets the eye. The author of "What It Takes: Fighting for My Life and My Love of the Game" beat a rare form of bone cancer and has been in remission for almost five years. He says: “When I was diagnosed with cancer, football was my goal for living.".</P><P>Biggest lesson learned: “My sport gave me a reason to fight. On my darkest days of back-to-back chemotherapy and radiation sessions, I would envision myself running out of the tunnel again with my teammates. It gave me hope, strength and a platform from which to help others facing adversity.”</P><P>How this applies to you: “Have hope. Fight hard. Love what you do. And believe in yourself. Believe that you have what it takes.”</P><P><B>5. Assess the performance edge and be willing to go there.</B> Nationally certified race car instructor Sabine H. Schoenberg also happens to be a designer, builder and real estate agent.</P><P>The founder of SabinesHome.com says her racing hobby involves commitment. Any hesitation can result in lifting the foot off the gas pedal. “Even the slightest movement in that direction destabilizes the car. You will spin ... it can be serious.” </P><P>The challenge, she says, is how to get to the limit. “Steadfastness and endurance are a big part of it. The willingness to always learn and improve is another huge part. Conditions are always different. Things are never static.”</P><P>Biggest lesson learned: “Racing a car starts and ends with correct assessment. You want to get to your own and your car's performance to the edge or to the fastest speed. In business, too, you need to assess where that performance edge is and be willing to go there.” She explains when developing a property you have the choice to build a similar home that other developers are building. She says: “It looks like a safe path – but is it?”</P><P>How this applies to you: “Racing a car is opposite to street driving. Your biggest obstacle to overcome is one's own misconceptions! <P>Between holiday vacations, company closures and snow days, hiring managers are still seeking qualified candidates to fill positions and looking to network with those on the job hunt.</P><P><BR>Even if you're already balancing shopping and entertaining, here are a few reasons why now is a terrific time to activate your job search.</P><P><BR><STRONG>[See: The 10 Worst Times to Switch Jobs.]</STRONG></P><P><BR><STRONG>Qualified candidates stand out. </STRONG>Depending on the company and the amount of time job seekers have on their hands, there can be an influx or decrease in job openings and applications. Still, Christine Assaf, human resources professional and founder of the careers blog hrtact.com, says you shouldn't waste available time. "Gaining experience in networking and interviewing is always a plus when job seeking, so therefore don't quit the search during the season because you may miss an opportunity," she says.</P><P><BR>According to Nancy H. Segal, owner of career coaching and HR consulting firm Solutions for the Workplace, LLC, "holiday hires are not just limited to seasonal hires. For some employers, there are less distractions during the holiday period so that they are more able to focus on assessing candidates," she wrote in an email.</P><P><BR>However, Assaf says there's usually a decrease in hiring during the holiday season. "Businesses are trying to hit their final budget at the end of the year and sometimes hold off on hiring until after the new year," she explains.</P><P><BR>As Segal points out, continuing the job search during the holidays shows that you're interested, and hiring managers have time to focus on you. "You may get to see people who normally would not have time to talk to you," she writes. Keep in mind that because the season is filled with events, vacations and company holidays, a hiring process that would usually take a few weeks might take longer. Segal advises job searchers to regularly check their emails and voicemails for communication from potential employers. "Respond in a timely manner," she writes. "You do not want a potential employer to think you are ignoring their efforts to contact you." Another tip: Abstain from using holiday music on your outgoing voicemail message. Doing so may sound unprofessional, Segal writes.</P><P><BR><STRONG>[Read: Jump Out of the No-Pile and Onto the Call-Back List.]</STRONG></P><P><BR><STRONG>You can add value to a potential employer's bottom line. </STRONG>Hiring managers can be too distracted by holiday events, vacation time and personal obligations to even look at applications and résumés during the holidays, but they could be planning to hire in 2014. Many companies have goals for the new year that can't be fulfilled without new hires. Even if you're also busy with seasonal activities, you should make yourself available. "It is still a buyer's market, and there will be plenty of applicants who will be available. If a job seeker is out of town, they could offer a phone interview or, even better, a Skype or FaceTime interview," Segal writes.</P><P><BR>Assaf adds that applicants should be truthful and upfront about holiday needs and respectful of potential employers' schedules. However, according to Segal, the holidays are "also a great time for informational interviewing – you can take people out for coffee, etc. – and since things tend to be quiet during this period, they may be able to give you more time and attention than normal."</P><P><BR><STRONG>[Read: 6 Ways to Expand Your Network This Holiday Season.]</STRONG></P><P><BR><STRONG>Holiday networking can get your foot in a door that's not open yet.</STRONG> Use holiday schmoozing to your advantage. Holiday events are prime networking territory for applicants to meet people capable of hiring and in search of viable leads. Events may be held in your area by local and national professional organizations, private employers and even friends who can introduce and connect you. "Holiday networking events are a great way for job seekers to mix and mingle to find good contacts for potential jobs," Assaf says.</P><P><BR>Sending out holiday cards can add a special touch. "A holiday card with a short handwritten note can be useful – the card should be of the 'happy holidays' variety rather than one that has pictures of the candidate's children or pets; nor should the card have religious overtones," Segal writes. 3 Types of Recruiters and How to Impress Them

<P>Have you been contacted by an outside recruiter about a potential job opportunity? You're not alone. More jobs were filled by third-party recruiters last year than in each of the past eight years, according the CareerXroads Source of Hire report, released last week. </P><P>Incorporating recruiters in your job search strategy yields another source to hear about opportunities that you may not have learned about otherwise. Another way to get sourced for opportunities is by having the right online reputation.</P><P>Many job seekers are confused about how recruiters work, or they have unrealistic expectations of what a recruiter is supposed to do. Learn about the different types of recruiters and review how their roles are slightly different. While the role may vary from recruiter to recruiter, these general guidelines offer a place to start:<BR></P><P><B>Recruiters</B><B>  <BR></B><BR>This term applies to people whose primary responsibility is to find and hire the best candidate for job openings. There are two types of recruiters: inside recruiters and external or third-party recruiters. While their mission is the same, how they are compensated is different. Inside recruiters are salaried employees with a full load of positions to fill. External recruiters are usually paid commission based on jobs filled. <BR></P><P><B>I</B><B>nside Recruiters</B></P><P>They are often called "in-house recruiters" or "corporate recruiters." Companies with numerous positions to fill often have internal recruiters who are solely responsible for hiring, whereas smaller companies have human resources teams that oversee all aspects of talent management. Inside recruiters are typically employees of the company, but sometimes they can be contracted employees. <BR><B></B><BR>The pros and cons: What's nice about inside recruiters is that they know the culture and overall needs of the organization or company. However, inside recruiters may not know the true nature of the job if they don’t have a close relationship with the hiring manager or haven’t previously placed people within that department. Also, inside recruiters often serve as filters that screen candidates who don’t fit the criteria.</P><P><B>External or Third-Party Recruiters<BR></B><BR>External or third-party recruiters are hired by a company to fill positions. Almost 6 percent of new hires were attributed to using third-party recruiters in 2013, according to CareerXroads. A company may decide to use these types of recruiters for a number of reasons: There's been an increase in the number of jobs to be filled; the position is very specific and difficult to fill; or the company wants to keep the opening quiet. </P><P>The main responsibilities for both external and internal recruiters is to find and present the most qualified candidate. External recruiters fall into two camps: retained or contingent. Retained means that that the recruiter or agency has a contract relationship with the company (either exclusive or not) to help find the right talent. Contingent means contingent on placement. In other words: If a recruiter provides the candidate who gets hired, he or she gets paid. If the candidate presented is not hired, the recruiter is not compensated. You may even notice several recruiters competing to fill the same job. You should only partner with one recruiter in this case.</P><P>The pros and cons: An external recruiter serves as a middleman between you and the company. If one job doesn’t work out, he or she may have other opportunities for you. Plus, if you meet the qualifications of the job the recruiter is trying to fill, he or she will be extremely interested in you. <B></B>But keep in mind that not all recruiters are created equal. Some have less than scrupulous reputations and recruiting practices. Also, if a recruiter doesn’t place many people with jobs like yours, you may not hear from him or her again.</P><P><B>S</B><B>ourcers<BR></B><BR>In some cases, companies have specialists known as sourcers. These professionals do the digging to find the very best candidates and then pass the candidate information to the recruiter. Sourcers are known for their masterful sleuthing and research abilities. More than 60 percent of the companies surveyed in the CareerXroads report said they have a separate division or group that only does sourcing. Imagine the difference in workload if you were a recruiter who didn’t have to find candidates.<BR></P><P>The decline in resume database searching gives candidates one more reason to enrich their LinkedIn presences. CareerXroads reported that when hiring from a job board, 50 percent of companies hired from job postings rather than resume searches. Spend time refining your LinkedIn profile, which almost 60 percent ?of companies said has a critical impact on sourcing and recruiting candidates.<BR></P><P>The number of new hires sourced from referrals, job boards and career sites decreased last year, but it's still significant. One of the few sources of hire expected to increase is direct sourcing, which grew by 5 percentage points between 2012 and 2013?,? according to CareerXroads. So what does this mean for you? To be a sourced candidate, you want to be recognized or well-known within your industry or role, connected to the right people or have optimized keywords in your LinkedIn profile and other places online. </P><P><B>Hannah Morgan</B> writes and speaks on career topics and job search trends on her blog Career Sherpa. Plan to follow up with someone in human resources after you have submitted your application. Ask what the time frame is for filling the job, and then ask if your application was received. Always end every conversation by asking when you should follow up next and with whom. The really eager job seekers will make that call the same day the application is submitted. The less assertive job seekers wait about a week.</div>

If you don’t take the time to do this, then why should the company take time to review your qualifications for the job?</div>

<b>MYTH: You should network with human resources. </b>One of the many roles human resources serves is to fill open job requisitions. Often, there are numerous requisitions in the pipeline, and the No. 1 priority is to fill these jobs. He or she probably doesn’t know about future openings or department-level plans. And and even if he or she did, the advice you get would be to wait until you see something posted.</div>

That job has probably been circulating inside the company for weeks. The person you are contacting may even be in the running for the job.</div>

If your application and résumé don’t show how you are a perfect match for the job, the recruiter has very little interest in speaking with you.</div>

<b>MYTH: Your </b><b>résumé</b><b> is the most important job search tool. </b>It is important to have a well-written résumé. However, how many hours do you spend updating, modifying, tweaking and adapting it? Too many. The numerous hours you spend hiding behind a computer screen means you aren’t spending time on the phone reaching out to people or attending one-on-one networking meetings.</div>

Invest your time wisely. How many people will actually take the time to thoroughly review your résumé and ask you questions about each job you held? Much of the detail you obsess over is irrelevant to hiring professionals or will be overlooked in haste.</div>
